The Choco Toucan

The Choco toucan (Ramphastos brevis) is an iconic bird of the tropical rainforests of northwestern Ecuador and Colombia. Famous for its striking appearance, it stands out for its half-yellow and half-black beak, its bright yellow chest, and the olive-green skin around its eyes.

Fun facts that make it unique:

  • Expert howler: When two toucan species share a habitat, one croaks and the other howls. The Choco toucan is known for a call that sounds like a deep croak or howl.
  • Huge but light beak: Although its massive bill makes up a large part of its size, it is surprisingly lightweight. It consists of a spongy keratin structure that allows the bird to reach fruit on thin branches without losing balance.
  • Thermal radiator: Besides eating, the toucan uses its large beak to regulate body temperature. It releases heat when the tropical rainforest gets too hot.
  • Flagship bird: This species represents its region so well that it was officially declared the Flagship Bird of the Pichincha province in Ecuador, winning a public vote over other native birds.
  • Curled-up sleeper: To rest inside tree cavities, these birds fold their tails forward and tuck their bills into their backs. This compact posture makes them look like a ball of feathers.

If you are planning to spot this beautiful species, its main habitat is in the Mindo Ecuador Protected Forest and the Mashpi Reserve, located very close to Quito. You can arrange excursions or guided visits through the www.chocotoucanreserve.com
